Since September 2006 Sue's key role in the Centre for Equity is in the area of development and research 'D&R'. These are interventions devised at the local level aimed at challenging inequities within education systems.
Previous Experience
Online Development and Research (2003-6)
Sue coordinated and designed the collaborative development of an online cross-school research methods resource for professional masters' degrees run in the School of Education. She also advised and supported the development of pedagogic materials appropriate for online masters' courses in English Language Teacher Education and authored the course in teaching methodologies. She ran a workshop for the Centre for Educational Leadership on theories and issues related to design for online learning. During this time she completed a MSc in Educational Research Methodologies based on her research into tutors' perceptions of course design for online learning.
As part of the eChina~UK programme, Sue developed and coordinated the use of a pedagogic template to focus the collaborative development of learning materials for an online Master of Education programme for in-service high school teachers studying at Beijing Normal University.
Teaching
Before joining the University of Manchester in October 2003 Sue worked for 16 years as a manager, teacher developer and teacher in post compulsory and secondary education. She taught, manged and developed courses in English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), academic communication skills, and Geography. She taught English as a Foreign Language (EFL) abroad for four of those years. While working, she completed a diploma in TEFL, and her first master's degree focusing on the role of technology, film, and task-based learning in language learning and cross cultural communication.
From 2001-06, Sue was chair of the Northern Association of Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages - a voluntary organisation run by teachers for teachers from across sectors and phases in education to provide teacher development sessions 6 times a year based on their requests.
