I am Professor of Education in the University of Manchester where I co-direct the Centre for Equity in Education (with Mel Ainscow) and lead work on education in urban contexts. I was formerly Professor of Special Needs Education and Director of the Special Needs Research Centre at the University of Newcastle. I have worked in universities since 1988. Prior to that, I spent 13 years as a teacher, mainly in urban comprehensive schools.

Research and teaching interests
My research and teaching interests are in the relationship between social and educational inclusion and, particularly, in the relationship between education and other areas of public policy in urban contexts. I have undertaken a great deal of funded research sponsored by the Economic and Social Research Council, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, government departments, LEAs and other public bodies. I am currently leading the national evaluation of full-service extended schools and a study of school governing bodies in disadvantaged areas. I am also working on a review of the research evidence on the relationship between poverty and education. I have been a member of the government's ministerial working group on Special Educational Needs, and of the National Education Research Forum, as well as working with a range of government and government agency task groups.

International experience

I have worked extensively with teachers, policy-makers and researchers in a range of countries, including Australia, Brazil, Chile, China, Denmark, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, South Africa and Spain. In 2001, I co-ordinated the production of the Open File on Inclusive Education for UNESCO.
