Design and Technology
Frequently asked questions
What are employment prospects like?
D&T remains a shortage subject and very good employment opportunities exist. Promotion prospects are also very good with some ex-trainees becoming heads of department within two years. International employment opportunities are also quite common with several ex-trainees working abroad in countries such as Kuwait and New Zealand.
Do you only offer materials and control systems?
Materials and control systems are offered together along with the key theme of designing as they are commonly delivered in schools within the same area and have many of the same processes. However some trainees have been able to offer a third area of textiles if they have previous experience in this area. We do not offer food technology.
Can I specialise in graphics?
There are no courses that offer just graphics at PGCE as graphics is considered a generic activity. However most trainees will get the opportunity to teach graphics whilst on school placements and can choose to specialise in graphics when seeking employment (although this may restrict employment options).
What do previous trainees say about the course?
All aspects of the course are evaluated regularly and overwhelmingly the response is positive. Last year 100% rated the course as good or excellent with 90% rating it as excellent!
