Frequently asked questions

I have a joint degree in Spanish and French and want to be able to teach both languages.  The GTTR course codes need me to specify either Spanish R4X1 or French R1X1.  Does that mean that I will only be able to teach one of my languages during the PGCE year?

No, the course codes are for administrative purposes only.  You will have the opportunity to teach both languages during the PGCE course.  We actively encourage all our trainees to have experience of teaching their second foreign language (French, German, Spanish and possibly Italian) in order to increase employability prospects at the end of the course.

What if my second foreign language is not at degree level?

Your second foreign language does not necessarily need to be at degree level, beginners level will suffice (GCSE or A-level equivalent).  You will have the opportunity to develop your subject knowledge through a small number of language classes, independent study and observing lessons during your placements.

For details of recommended, funded, intensive courses in French and German designed to support you to achieve sufficient competence in the language to enable you to teach accurately and confidently at secondary level to at least key stage 3 (ages 11-14), please view French and German extension course information via the links below:

The above courses are also available ab initio.

Is there a degree of flexibility in the timing of interviews, such as for applicants who are working abroad?

Yes. We recognise the difficulties faced by people who are contributing to the education of young people in different parts of the world, and we are normally prepared to negotiate an interview date that is reasonably convenient for applicants. However, applicants should be aware that we operate on a series of fixed interview dates throughout the academic year, and applicants in this position are expected to accept one of these dates.
