Consider funding options early

Funding your studies will be a crucial factor in your decision to apply for a postgraduate degree, so the earlier you consider your funding options, the better.

You can choose to pay your own tuition fees and living costs, or you can seek whole or partial funding from various sources.

The sources of funding available are different for UK/EU and international students.

Commonwealth Shared Scholarships 2008 - School of Education

The School of Education, University of Manchester is pleased to announce that it will be offering one Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme award for Postgraduate Taught Programmes commencing in September 2008.

Awards made under this scheme are jointly funded by the Department for International Development (DIFD), as part of the United Kingdom International Development programme to developing countries, and participating institutions in the UK. 

The award is for full-time Manchester-based programme, and it covers international tuition fees, return airfares, a stipend and a number of additional allowances.  All courses undertaken must be demonstrably relevant to the economic, social or technological development of the candidate's home country.   The courses that are eligible are: 

Who is eligible to apply?

Applicants should:

  1. be nationals of (or permanently domiciled in) a Commonwealth developing country, and not currently be living or studying in a developed country
  2. have not undertaken studies lasting one year or more in a developed country
  3. hold a first degree at either first or upper second class level
  4. be no more than 35 years old on commencement of the course (some preference is given to those aged 30 or below)
  5. be sufficiently fluent in English to pursue the course
  6. have not previously studied for one year or more in a developed country
  7. not be employed by a government department (at national level) or a parastatal organisation (employees of universities are normally acceptable, however)
  8. be able to confirm in writing that neither they or their families would otherwise be able to pay for the proposed course of study
  9. be willing to confirm that they will return to their home country as soon as their period of study is complete

The deadline for applications is 30 April 2008.

Applicants must have received an offer to study on a taught Master's programme within the School of Education before applying for the DFID SSS award.  Candidates will be contacted before the end of May and notified whether their application has been successful or not.
