Modalities of Learning
Teaching and learning is increasingly diverse in the places and spaces that it occurs. This research group is concerned with a range of modalities including: self-access; distance; computer-based; e-learning; blended; and computer adaptive testing and assessment amongst others. It is concerned with the methodologies that are employed in these spaces and the appropriateness for the learners and learning. It is also interested in the affordances and constraints of such modalities including the technologies and tools that are employed in the teaching and learning.
Projects in this area include:
Electra and Asia projects
Provide distance learning for teachers to improve their ability to work in culturally diverse classrooms (Liz Smith and Alan Jervis).
Mathematics Assessment for Learning and Teaching (MALT)
This project funded by Hodder Murray is developing a new series of age-standardised Mathematics tests with provision for effective on-screen assessment and diagnostic follow-up.
Technology at the Planning Table
How do teachers, administrators and software developers negotiate the form and functions of the virtual learning environments they come together to create? How are their different assumptions about teaching and learning manifested in these systems? This project, jointly run with the University of Alabama, has attracted funding from the British Academy and the Worldwide Universities Network. (Drew Whitworth)
