Research activities

There are three elements to the Centre's research work: sponsored research; research in collaboration with partners in education and children's services; and Centre-led research studies.

Sponsored research

Members of the Centre are involved in a range of research projects which explore issues of equity relating, in particular, to social inclusion, education in urban contexts, and the impacts of poverty on education.

Collaborative research

Using a development and research process, the Centre works with professionals in education and children's services to develop their existing practices and establish new ways of working in order to address equity issues.

Centre-led research

The Centre for Equity in Education is leading an area-based study of issues in educational equity in the North West of England. The study explores how learners living in disadvantaged areas interact with the education system, and the educational opportunities available to them in the areas they live.

Drawing together data from existing data-bases and newly generated case study data, the study grounds learners' experiences of education within their local community contexts. This will create a rich evidence-base which can be used to:
" Illuminate patterns of equity and inequity in education in areas where inequities are stark
" Create a systematic account of these patterns which can inform theorising about equity issues and policy development.
