March 2006:

The Education in Urban Contexts group organised a Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) funded international seminar exploring the links between education and poverty.  This seminar, brought together prestigious academics from a range of academic disciplines both from the UK and overseas who might share insights and perspectives on how the relationship between education and poverty might be theorised and investigated.

Speakers included Jean Anyon (Professor of Social and Educational Policy City University of New York), Pauline Lipman (Associate Professor, School of Education, De Paul University, Chicago), Dr William Franklin (Pacific Oak College, Human Development Department), Luis Miron (Professor and director of The Center for Collaborative Research in Education, University of California, Irvine), John Bynner (Professor of Social Sciences in Education Institute of Education), Dr Leon Feinstein (Director & Reader in Economics of Education Institute of Education University of London), Dr. Ruth Lupton (Institute of Education University of London),  Meg Maguire (Professor of Urban Education Kings College) Geoff Whitty (Director of Institute of Education,  University of London, David Hulme  (Professor and Associate Director of Chronic Poverty Research Centre, University of Manchester, Pat Thomson (Professor of Education, University of Nottingham).

An evening seminar series was run with international speakers raising topics of central importance to education in urban contexts, attended by university and other education professionals.
