Abstract: The 'International Successful School Principal Project' is a five-nation, ten-year research project. We visited 30 schools and observed and interviewed school leaders, teachers, students and parents at several occasions in 2002-4. The idea to revisit the schools in 2009 came when we discussed whether the leaders had been able to sustain the school's success. In order to understand why so many had been successful and how their leadership was brought into relations between teachers and students, we needed to refine and combine theories of leadership, distribution, sense making, decision making processes and deliberation. We also needed to cultivate our understanding of relations between policy makers' need for managerial accountability and student and schools' need for other forms of accountability.
